The motivational guide Do It! provides self-help and advice on life fulfillment. The authors provide an intriguing story of controversy.

The book Do It! Let’s Get Off Our Buts is an exciting, simple and fun read. Though originally written by John-Roger and Peter McWilliams in 1991, the information it contains is no less relevant or important today. Part of the Life 101 Series, Do It! is full of short, humorous chapters that cover a multitude of broad self-help topics. From following dreams to relinquishing negative habits, this book serves as a comprehensive motivational guide for anyone looking to dive head first into the world of personal improvement.

Every other page of the book contains a poignant, thought-provoking quote from famous individuals in a wide variety of fields. From comedians to philosophers, these quotes provide additional humor and insight from fun, unique perspectives.

Another unusual aspect of this book is the comprehensiveness. At just about 500 pages, it manages to explore some rather weighty topics in-depth, while still being engaging and entertaining. Examples of chapters include: "The Myth of Money," "Fame and Power;" "The Energy of Achievement;" and "Be Prepared to be Scared." Throughout each, the authors walk the reader through exercises and discussions that read like a conversation with an old friend—easy and heartwarming.

One of the benefits of this book is that you can open it to any page and pick up reading right there. It’s not necessary to read it front to back. The chapters are short and each contains a whole “conversation” covering a single topic. It’s great for short bursts of reading material so take it on vacation or leave it on the bed stand.

About the Authors, John-Roger and Peter McWilliams

Interestingly, the Life 101 Series and its authors are somewhat controversial, though one can safely say that all of the information provided in Do It! is good-natured, positive and decidedly uncontroversial. At the time it was written, John-Roger, the leader of the Church of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness, was Peter McWilliams’ spiritual guru. However, McWilliams later distanced himself from the movement and claimed sole authorship of the Life 101 books.

McWilliams then authored a book titled Life 102: What to Do When Your Guru Sues You, in which he claims John-Roger brainwashed him and attempts to out the movement as a cult. In an open letter written by McWilliams prior to his death in June 2000, he stated that he would like the book removed from circulation as its contents were no longer something with which he wanted to have his name associated.

All of the books that Peter McWilliams owns copyright for are now available online for free on his website, except for Life 102, the copyright for which now belongs to The Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness.
